Your comparison between this and the latest Apple products is a comparison of apples to oranges. First off, the Snapdragon is a SOC, but the Apple ARM chips are not. While the Snapdragon has 12 cores, the M3 has 8, the M3 PRO has 12, and the M3 MAX has 16 cores. The Snapdragon has a single GPU core while the M3 has 10, the M3 PRO has 18 and the M3 MAX can have up to 40 GPU cores. The Apple M3 chips have ARM and GPU cores optimized SPECIFICALLY to perform certain functions for certain apps to look competitive with the x86 chips. The problems with running older x86 Mac apps on the new ARM Macs are just as bad as the problems running x86 Windows apps on an ARM Windows platform. There are a lot of older apps that won't run on the new Mac architecture. Your review did not mention this and was thus a bit unfair to Windows on ARM. The Snapdragon SOC is designed for multiple uses, not just running a Windows O/S, so it is not optimized for this one use case. The use of a commercial SOC means switching to another SOC is more complicated, which is why you could not get Linux to run. With the x86 architecture, all that extra baggage we call legacy support is what makes switching between the latest Intel and AMD offerings so easy. Again, the Apple systems were optimized to run specific apps. Apple paid a lot of money for those app creators to port to the new architecture and take advantage of the new features they added to these ARM cores to get the app performance they are getting. Neither Microsoft nor Qualcomm are subsidizing app creators to port to the ARM platform. Most apps, ones that don't require specific H/W acceleration, are easily ported to Windows on ARM by flipping a build switch, and you can build the ARM apps on the same x86 development system. I know this because I am one of those Windows S/W writers whose work requires them to build for both H/W architectures. Your base Macbook Pro with an M3, 512GB storage, and 16GB of memory will run you around $600 more than the HP, and will probably perform about the same on any CPU-based test. This is the Apple system you should be comparing this HP to. The Windows on ARM offerings offer a low-power alternative to those who need battery life more than they need high performance. Run that M3 MAX at full throttle and see just how long the battery lasts.

Do the photo editor prompts work better if you get a lot more specific by saying things like, on the space shuttle photo: "replace the sky with a night time sky filled with stars" or with other photos things like "change the grass to gravel" or "make the car red" or "change the suit color to blue", etc.? Qualcomm has done impressive work with the CPU ARM chip design, but I don't understand why they continue to add these crap stick labels. In general, ARM is extremely power efficient. 👍🏼

For web browsing, this looks ok. But i cant understand why these are more expensive than x86-64 laptops because i saw somewhere these chips are way cheaper than intel.

This is basically an alexa and an old onn box combined with more RAM and a slightly better CPU. Not to mention Dolby and other improvements. Also has a better remote. Well worth the extra money. Just wish they upped the GPU as that would have been a no brainer for everyone. Maybe there will be an ultra version with that?

As expected, and as they did in the past, they are trying to charge a price premium for Arm version and these devices are way overpriced. I own 2 of the earlier snapdragon laptops and they were ok, but very overpriced. On the software side, most applications are mainly a bunch of OS calls, so not having ARM natively versions means the publishers could not be bothered to add ARM as a target and recompiled their code. Maybe games and video editors are more complicated, but 95% of the apps out there should require very little "porting". Regarding anything leveraging th e GPU, these devices share memory, and many games assume a discrete GPU with its own memory. Drivers are the achilles heel still for these devices, with sub-par eGPU drivers for the ARM GPU's IMO. I like WOA, but think I will wait another generation until the snapdragon exclusivity agreement dies to consider "upgrading" my beloved Lenovo C635 WOA laptop.

Many of you have asked about eGPUs - I did try to get one working on here but there are currently no drivers available (at least on the Nvidia side). The GPU was recognized in the device manager but I was not able to get it working.

I just bought one of these to replace my Firestick that suddenly decided to no longer want to recognize its remote. I've always had random problems with it and I was already on the verge of replacing it with a Chromecast, but then saw recommendations for this ONN Box and figured it would be worth trying out for $20. I haven't gotten mine yet, but it seems like it does exactly what I need it to do and not having to jump through hoops to sideload basic android apps will save me a lot of headaches.

I personally think we owe a duty of care to family freinds and neighbours to help them when we know they are being disadvantaged. We of course need to respect their privacy and wishes but a little help may be appreciated if they take up the offer of help. Fully understanding their needs is important. In the UK in the 1980/90s BT ( pretty much a monopoly at the time) were charging my mother £7.50 per month for phone rental (renting the handset not the line) and had been for years, she paid north of £700 for that handset that could have been bought for £30. Older people are likely to need the most help as they come from a time when most companies were not snakes.

I think you should use smth with newer kernel, like 6.10 or 6.11 when it comes to linux

Issue with these laptops is that performance varies greatly depending on what power profile Windows is running on. More disturbing is that those power profiles are not dynamic and have to be set by the user. So if the laptop was set to "efficiency", performance takes a huge hit. So for average users who don't mess with power profiles and just use the laptop as was set by the manufacturer the performance is not consistent with other laptops using the same chips.

I am surprised about the USB4 connectivity issue, and like you say is probably a firmware issue. Since Microsoft updated the SQ3 arm-based Windows Dev Kit 2023 firmware to support the USB4 surface dock, I've been able to connect and use my TB3 and TB4 SSDs, though not at the full 40 Gbps. I run Ubuntu 22.04 on my arm PC using WSL2. That also supports graphics hardware acceleration. Many of the well-known Linux apps and games have already been cross compiled for arm64.

I don't understand why someone would wanna buy this for gaming. this is for ppl who wants long battery life on a laptop to do work or casual stuff. if u wanna game, get a proper gaming machine. but the thing is, this thing cost so much, so it should be able to do whatever its competitor can.

I wonder if WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) would run on it? Should be interesting times.

At the top where it has recommended, Library and Collections , mine has categories instead, is there a way I can change it from categories to collections like yours?

Support for this CPU in the Linux kernel is promised in version 6.11 which is likely to be released close to the end of this year.

I would still have Intel due to their durability and sustained loads. Not hyped about all AI in my business and chip, unless it was at minimum Apple soc, but hate MacOS common sense nonsense ! Wish we stayed at classic windows without ads or new privacy concerns

I frequently contemplate whether the public will endure the inconvenience of obtaining the required devices to access OTA ATSC 3.0 channels, considering the significant investment TV broadcasters are making in DRM. The familiar phrase "cut the cord" resonates, recalling when cable costs were prohibitive, and now it appears we may be transitioning to exclusively maintaining streams and abandoning OTA entirely.

Totally agree with this review. Why would you pay for something that is not 100% windows compatible just yet? Maybe in a year or two it will get better, but right now you are paying to be a beta tester.
